Down or Synthetic? How to Choose the Right Sleeping Bag for Aconcagua
Aconcagua is a cold mountain, and at high camp, a sleeping bag is not just another piece of gear. It can be the difference between arriving at summit day rested or already depleted.
Aconcagua is a cold mountain. That statement sounds obvious until you are actually there, at Camp Cólera, nearly 6,000 meters above sea level, watching the sun disappear behind the Pacific. When it does, the temperature drops fast and hard — 30, sometimes 35 degrees below zero. At that point, the quality of your sleeping bag is not a gear preference. It is the difference between arriving at summit day rested or already broken.
This is one of the subjects that comes up most often during our expedition briefings, and specifically in the gear checks that follow. Every season, we find passengers who have arrived without the right bag. Not because they did not prepare. Most of them did. But Aconcagua has a way of being underestimated. Climbers compare it to Kilimanjaro, or to other Seven Summits objectives they have read about, and arrive with equipment calibrated for a different mountain. That comparison does not survive the first night at Plaza de Mulas. Aconcagua is not a trekking peak with altitude. The gear needs to reflect that.
So: down or synthetic?
Both options have real advantages and genuine drawbacks, and the choice has consequences that go beyond warmth. The filling you choose will affect the weight of your pack, the compressed size of the bag, how it handles moisture, how long it lasts, and what you pay for it. None of these are minor considerations on a multi-week expedition at altitude.
Down
The case for down starts with compression. A quality down sleeping bag packs smaller than almost any synthetic equivalent at the same warmth rating, which matters when you are organizing a pack for the high camps. It is also lighter for the same level of insulation, which improves warmth for the weight you carry over multiple days of climbing. And if you look after it properly, following the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and storing it correctly between seasons, a good down bag can last many years without losing much of its thermal performance.
The case against down is equally well known. When down insulation gets wet, it loses loft, and with it much of its ability to retain heat. On Aconcagua, keeping the bag dry throughout the ascent is not optional. It is a logistical priority. The other argument against down is price. Expedition-rated down bags usually sit at the higher end of the market. Even so, when a bag is well maintained and used over many seasons, the cost per expedition tends to make more sense over time.
Synthetic
Synthetic insulation has closed the gap with down considerably in recent years, and the best modern synthetic bags perform at a level that would have been difficult to imagine when these products first became widespread. The most immediate advantages are price, since synthetic bags are generally more affordable at equivalent warmth ratings, and moisture performance. Unlike down, synthetic insulation continues to provide meaningful thermal protection even when wet, and it dries faster.
Within synthetic options, there is an important distinction between continuous-filament and short-staple construction. Continuous-filament insulation uses a thicker, unbroken fiber that is stronger, more durable, and better at holding its structure over time, with fewer opportunities for cold spots to develop. The tradeoff is that it tends to feel stiffer and compress less efficiently.
Short-staple insulation uses finer fibers packed tightly together to reduce heat loss. This gives sleeping bags a softer, more down-like feel and better compressibility. The downside is that it is generally less durable than continuous-filament insulation and can shift over time, creating cold spots as the fill moves inside the bag.
There is also the issue of bulk. Synthetic bags, regardless of construction type, are usually heavier and larger than comparable down models, and their insulating performance tends to degrade somewhat each time they are repeatedly stuffed into a compression sack. The Part That Is Not Optional
Neither option is perfect. The right choice depends on where you are climbing, how you manage your gear, what your budget allows, and how much weight you are willing to carry.
What is not negotiable is the rating. On Aconcagua, cutting corners on warmth is a mistake that shows up quickly. Sleeping well at altitude is not a comfort issue. It is a performance issue. And on summit day, performance is everything.
