AMG MULES

AMG has a long tradition of transporting gear safely and promptly to the various camps on Aconcagua. Our professional teams of Arrieros (muleteers) have dedicated their lives to raising mules and horses and have earned their living by the transporting cargo for over three decades. They are extremely skilled at managing mules in the mountains and protecting your luggage from damage.

LOS PUQUIOS DEPOT
Our Depot, Mule Ranch, also known as “Los Puquios,” lies near the entrance of the park and is the residence for all of our Arrieros, logistical staff, and over 140 mules during the climbing season. Los Puquios provides a safe and convenient place to store climbing gear so it can be quickly sent up to the camps. Our administrative staff is very conscientious in making sure your gear is delivered to the right location safely and on time.

MULES
Although mules have been used to carry as much as 180 kg, we limit loads for our mules to 60 kg so as they can move comfortably in the mountain and maintain good health. They are amazingly sure-footed and have tremendous endurance. AMG takes great pride in how we care for our mules. The arrieros make sure all mules are well-fed, have proper rest between carries, and regular veterinarian visits.

LOAD TRANSPORT
Clients may send luggage to Los Puquios and we will transport it to any of our three camps at Confluencia, Plaza de Mulas, and Plaza Argentina on the day that you request. We have permanent staff at each camp to receive your luggage and store it safely until you arrive.

When descending back to a Base Camp from your summit attempt, contact us by radio to reserve mules for the return journey back to Los Puquios. This will allow us to have mules ready at your time of departure.

INCLUSIONS WITH MULE SERVICES
Hiring mule service with ACONCAGUA MOUNTAIN GUIDES includes the following:

  • Storage room in Los Puquios and Base Camps.
  • Vehicle transportation from your lodging in Penitentes to the beginning of the trek. (Horcones Valley or Vacas Valley)
  • Clean, new toilets in our Base Camps.
  • Transport of trash and human waste from Base Camp to Los Puquios for disposal. (Staff in Base Camps will sign your climbing permit as proof that our company will be responsible for all garbage.)

We recommended bringing a duffle bag to cover luggage carried by mules and covering the ends of ice axes and crampons to avoid injury to the mules or arrieros.

WHAT IS PORTER SERVICE?

Porter service refers to the assistance with transportation of gear to the different High Camps to reduce the amount of weight climbers carry each day on the mountain. Over the last 10 years, this service has become widely used, and today the number of climbers who hire this service outnumbers the ones who don’t. It has greatly increased the success rate for summiting Aconcagua.

AMG PORTER STAFF

AMG porters are primarily extremely fit young climbers training to become future mountain guides. Porting loads allows them to earn an income while gaining the necessary climbing experience required to becoming a guide. The process to become a junior certified guide usually calls for three to four years of extensive training.

HOW IT WORKS At each of our Base Camps (Plaza de Mulas and Plaza Argentina), we maintain a staff of high-altitude porters who are extremely professional and understand the importance of assisting you with your gear up the mountain. We have designed an easy-to-use and clearly defined porter system, where loads are priced by which camp the porter is carrying to, as well as the weight of the load. Note: Porters will also carry human waste and trash back down to Base Camp for disposal. When you hire a porter to the High Camps, you can also ask for help setting up your tent for an extra cost of USD $35.

Employing porters is a great option for reducing the load for climbers.
